Managed by Rada Tilly City Hall , the NPA Punta Marqués was created with the aim of protecting wildlife and scenic resources in the area. In 1984, the City Hall , by law, ( 609/ 84 ) established the interest of protecting the apostadero of one-haired sea lions (Otaria flavescens) located at the foot of the cliff and their interaction with people.
In 1985, the Punta Marqués Tourist Nature Reserve was created by Provincial Law (2580), joining the Provincial System of Protected Areas of Chubut. It is the most southern of the province with a coastal protection in an area of 500 m along the hábitat of the sea wolves.
Currently, according to the classification criteria provided by the IUCN (World Union for the Conservation of Nature), the ANP Punta Marqués was defined as Category V: Protected Terrestrial and Marine Landscape (protected area mainly for the conservation of terrestrial and marine landscapes , for recreational purposes)Its main objective is: “to preserve the natural and cultural qualities and to establish evolutionary and ecological processes.”
